Caitlin rolled down the window and let the warm Texas sunshine bathe her arm. It was a beautiful day. The sky was clear and so deep a blue it almost hurt. It reminded her of the painting she’d recently bought. Smiling in quiet anticipation, she turned up the radio until the country song blared across the Texas landscape.
Beside her on the front seat was a basket packed with as many different items as she could cram into it. She wanted this picnic to be the best ever. It was her first with a man. She tried to remember when she’d been young. Had she ever gone on a picnic with her parents? Probably not. They would have feared a problem. It was easier to stay near the oxygen and hospital than take chances.
She’d changed all that. Wondering at the chance meeting with her former doctor, she gave thanks again that it had happened. If she’d never found out, would she have ended up living her life as a quiet rendition of her mother? Never venturing out, never trying new things? Growing old without ever having lived?
No chance of that now, she thought. Life had been full of changes. And the most amazing thing—every one had been for the good. So far. She knew she would make mistakes. But she would learn from them and not repeat the same one twice.
Yesterday had proved to be totally different from her years in high school. Most of the teachers who went to the game had taught the team members when they’d been smaller. In a few years maybe some of the little boys in her class would be on the football team, and she’d have a vested interest in the games.
But the excitement of the match, the yelling of the crowds and the welcome given by her fellow teachers had been heady. She’d screamed with them, groaned when one of the players missed a pass and eaten hot dogs and popcorn until she was stuffed.
Another first. How many more were there?
Smiling, she saw the drive leading to the Lazy H Ranch. Where did they get the name? She didn’t picture Zach as lazy. Couldn’t picture any rancher succeeding if they didn’t give it their all. She’d have to ask.
Slowing when she reached Zach’s house, she wondered if she should have called to let him know when to expect her. He probably hadn’t stuck around the house waiting.
Climbing out of the car, she headed for the front door. Knocked. Turning to study the scenery while she waited, she heard nothing from inside. The rolling hills were green, from the recent rain, she supposed. Cattle grazed on the hills beyond the driveway. White faces, reddish-brown bodies. Not black Angus—the only breed she could name.
The minutes ticked by. It was quiet but for the soft soughing of the breeze and the occasional lowing in the distance of one of the steers. The day seemed even warmer than in town. Was it because of the open fields? Where was Zach?
She returned to her car and continued up the drive.
